Shrewsbury Folk Festival

Just had a fun weekend with Steve and Tree at Shrewsbury Folk Festival. We didn’t like the fact that our campsite was a very long work from the festival site, we did like the town, we didn’t like the dreadful weather, we did like the New Rope String Band.

I went shopping and bought Ann some new miniature shoes to collect from a ‘vintage’ shop, and I bought a Zeiss Ikon Nettar from an antique shop for ten pounds, a result. Let’s see how the roll of film I put through it comes out!

The best classic camera I have (after my M4) is a Voigtlander CL that has stood me in gr8 stead and it cost so little I am not frightened to lose it, unlike my Leica!

It has delivered a goodly range of colour and black and white images and the scale focusing is no problem. I don’t use the meter but my own Gossen lightmeter. I have a small detachable rangefinder for it that I sometimes use.Pictures here: Flickr Voigtlander CL pics

Zorki 4k no way jose

Well I have now tried 2 Zorki 4s, a 4 and a 4K. One bought from a Ukrainian trader on ebay and one from a Camera Fair in the UK. Both are in the landfill! Crippling seizures, impossible to turn speed dials, film ripping antics and only about 4 pics on a roll of 36 worth even dismissing.

Still, this one came out ok, 4k with a 25mm Snapshot Skopar from Cosina Voigtlander.

Matt and I went to Continuum 2006 in Leicester. This is a full weekend roleplaying convention with table top and freeform (dress up) roleplaying. It was the first time I’ve taken Matt and he and his friend Louis had a great time. NCSoft were there with Guild Wars and so they spent quit a bit of time playing that (and getting given goodies) but they said “it was great fun, people were very friendly and the games were good, even if NCSoft hadn’t been there we would have enjoyed it.”

I played in Newt’s Mythic Russia game, a great game of Savage Worlds set in Darkest Africa, Steve Dempsey’s Cold City game set in 1950s Berlin (gr8 system, gr8 setting, gr8 ref) and I ran my first ever Gwenthia game.

We had put a Gwenthia postcard and a CD with the latest Gwenthia pdf in the welcome bag, but no-one really knows the setting yet, so we had 8 people to the Gwenthia panel… the authors.. I think that the people who go to that Con are likely to like Gwenthia so I hope that it stirs ups some interest.

I met up with Danny Bourne Saturday night and we chatted about cameras and models, I even got to shoot a few frames with his Canon EOS 5D. I feel I managed to get back into the photography loop and I really like this picture of Matt I took there..

Anyhow, gr8 con, gr8 to see everyone, hope Furnace goes as well!

Ring Of Friends at Guilfest

That’s Ann, Neil, Pam, Jackie, Dave, Steve and Tree.. I love this picture. I am going to use my Lomo Fisheye to take such pictures whenever and however I can. I did turn the flash on if you have this camera and want to try it, you need the flash to fill in the shadows. (The camera has a black area in flash mode where the lens blocks the flash, but in daylight this isn’t obvious)

The Pimms bus at GuilFest wasn’t terribly original but it was so incredibly RED! I have a fisheye version taken on the Lomo as well, I’ll post that as well. This was taken with a 1960s German Voigtlander CL, scale focusing, set the lens and speed with a lightmeter and then guesstimate distance and click away. The film is very saturated, but actually the light was so intense that in fact reality was pretty colour saturated that day!

Guilfest 2006

Had a great time at GuilFest2006 with Ann, Tree, Steve, Neil, Pam, Dave and Jackie. Highpoints for me were Hugh Cornwell, Gary Numan, the Stranglers and the Ukele Orchestra of Great Britain. Incredibly hot, my thermometer on my lightmeter recorded 36 degrees Celcius as we sat in the blistering sun. I wore SPF 50 cream all week. Some reviews here: Reviews of GuilFest 2006

I am working hard now on completing the Gwenthia pdf (www.gwenthia.org) for the Continuum convention next week. I have already had 500 postcards printed, I am doing some A3 prints now, and Loz and I hope to have the full pdf complete by midnight Sunday for reproduction.

Car broken into

My car was broken into last night and my TomTom and a camera and iPod was stolen. It’s all replaceable, so I suppose I shouldn’t feel sad but I do. Ah well.

Doing some work on the new Gwenthia pdf but watching True Carribean Pirates on the History Channel as well. It’s fun but has some truly silly mistakes: an English ship flying the Union Jack in 1655? A ‘British Crown’ in 1655? I think not. Ah well, poor Americans.

Performancing for Firefox

I am trying a new extension for Firefox called Performancing for Firefox. It’s pretty simple, a pop up option from the bottom of the Firefox bottom toolbar. I use SeMagic on Windows and it’s pretty good, but given how much of my life revolves around the browser it’s pretty good to have an option there. I am using it on my Mac, but like most extensions it’s pretty OS independent.

I have just dropped Matt and his friend Laura at Meadowhall to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean film and now I am going to order Ann a taxi to go out tonight, so I am on my own again. Which wouldn’t matter, I have stuff to do, but I have had cluster headaches for 3 days now and I think all I might manage is to sit and watch Scrubs on abc1.

50 Fathoms and Traveller

I am now running two parallel (and unconnected) games of 50 Fathoms and I am quite delighted at how the two group of players react differently to the framework of islands, ships, trade and opportunity. It reminds me of the great SF rpg Traveller in which ships of humans and aliens travel from planet to planet trading and adventuring. Now Traveller always scared me as a ref, how could I cope when the players had such freedom as where to go? Oddly, even though the setting for 50 Fathoms has the same number of places as a Traveller sub sector, I am not scared at all. I am discusing the game at the Tavern BBS here.. and here..
